A petition, created on advocacy platform Avaaz, is asking the United Nations Human Rights Council to conduct an inquiry into human rights abuses by the Hong Kong government and police force.
At the time of writing, the petition had reached over 40,000 signatures out of its 50,000 goal.
According to the petition letter, penned by "Michael C", the authorities have been using "unjustifiable and unreasonable" force on protesters, including underage demonstrators.
The Umbrella Movement's aim is to achieve "one basic human right: freedom", a right that's been denied by Bejing, according to the petition.
The letter also presents several cases of alleged police abuse of force as evidence for their case, including reports of a police officer telling a Southeast Asian woman to "go back to India" and of Joshua Wong beingassaulted in the groin while in police custody.
The most notable case listed is of video footage appeared to show seven police officers beating up a handcuffed protester. The officers have since beenarrested.
