MTRC was overconfident on Guangzhou link, says CEO

Report by Damon PangThe work on the long distance link overshot both budget and time schedule. RTHK photoThe CEO of the MTR Corporation has conceded that - with hindsight - it was unfounded optimism to think that workers could catch up on delays to the express rail link to Guangzhou.

Lincoln Leong is the first MTR representative to attend a Legco select committee inquiry into the delay.

The project was meant to be finished next month but is now around three years behind schedule, at a cost overrun of about HK$18 billion.

Mr Leong apologised for the delays not being made public until April last year. He told lawmakers the MTRC had been too confident that it could catch up.
