Labour Party lawmaker Fernando Cheung has called on the government to legislate to require schools and childcare institutions to report suspected cases of child abuse to law-enforcing bodies.
His call follows the recent case of a seven-year-old girl found to be severely malnourished and with multiple injuries. It has been claimed that the girl's kindergarten had missed several chances seek help for her from the authorities.
Cheung, who also chairs a Legco subcommittee on domestic violence, complained that existing government guidelines encourage but don’t mandate the reporting of suspected abuse.
