Hong Kong and Taiwan have pledged to step up economic and cultural exchanges at the 6th annual meeting of the Hong Kong-Taiwan Economic and Cultural Co-operation and Promotion Council that was held in the territory on Thursday.
The council’s chairman, Charles Lee, said after the meeting that economic and cultural exchanges between the two places have improved greatly since the meetings started in 2010. Taiwan's representative, Lin Chu-chia, said he was pleased with the progress and looked forward to working on improvements to food safety in the coming year.
During the meeting, the two sides also agreed to explore five new areas of cooperation, including wetland protection, water conservation, trading of endangered animal species, intellectual property rights and urban renewal.
Trade between Hong Kong and Taiwan reached US$49 billion last year.
