Thousands of University of Hong Kong alumni voted at an extraordinary general meeting of the HKU convocation on the delay by the university’s governing body in appointing the remaining pro vice chancellor.
The non-binding ballot Tuesday at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre was aimed at putting pressure on the HKU council, Ming Pao Daily reported Wednesday.
In July, the council affirmed its decision to delay the appointment of the pro vice chancellor until a new deputy vice chancellor is appointed.
Voting ended at 10:30 p.m.
Altogether, 9,011 people voted, in person or by proxy.
The 3,257 alumni who were present included former chief secretary Anson Chan Fang On-sang, Democratic Party founder Martin Lee Chu-ming, Civic Party chairwoman Audrey Eu Yuet-mee and Civic Party leader Alan Leong Kah-kit.
Accounting firm BDO Ltd. is counting the votes and is expected to announce the results at 11 a.m. Wednesday.
One of the six motions proposed, which is whether to demand the appointment of former law dean Johannes Chan Man-mun, the sole candidate endorsed by HKU’s search committee, as pro vice chancellor this month, is likely to be passed, the report said.
Other motions included requesting Chief Executive Leung Chun-ying to step down as chancellor of the university and condemning the storming of the council chamber on July 28 by student protesters.
Meanwhile, the Education Bureau reiterated that the government has never been and will not be involved in the appointment process.
The bureau called on all others to refrain from putting pressure on the council.
