Police have arrested the spokesman of the localist group Hong Kong Indigenous following a protest in Sheung Shui against parallel traders. The demonstration was the first of its kind for months.

Ray Wong was arrested for assaulting a police officer. He had been pointing his finger at officers calling on them to detain a pro-Beijing demonstrator whom he alleged had shoved his friend in the neck.

Wong was then apparently pushed to the ground by officers and taken away in handcuffs.

Dozens of people had taken part in the march against the traders - who buy up goods in Hong Kong for resale on the mainland. The protesters said the traders were disrupting the daily lives of local residents.

Police had separated the demonstrators from pro-Beijing groups.

The Secretary for Commerce and Economic Development, Greg So, accused the protesters of being extremely irresponsible. He said radical action will only make mainlanders less willing to visit Hong Kong.

He urged the protesters to take into consideration the impact their actions could have on the livelihoods of people who work in Hong Kong's retail and catering industries.
