Student groups will host a series of activities at the end of this month to mark the first anniversary of the Occupy Central protests.

The Federation of Students and pupil-led protest group Scholarism will organise a two-day seminar at Tamar Park starting from September 26.

On September 26 last year, members of the two student groups barged into a forecourt at government headquarters in Admiralty, irate at being denied a rally at nearby Tamar Park in favour of a pro-Beijing event.

The area, known as Civic Square, had been a popular protest venue until it was fenced off. Scholarism convenor Joshua Wong Chi-fung and several federation leaders were arrested.

Wong said the theme of the seminar was to reflect on the umbrella movement and look at the way forward.

Speakers include Institute of Education academic Brian Fong Chi-hang, Occupy Central co-founder Chan Kin-man, Federation of Students secretary general Nathan Law Kwun-chung, and former editor-in-chief of University of Hong Kong Students’ Union magazine Undergrad Brian Leung Kai-ping.

Law said the seminar was part of the activities being planned to commemorate the first anniversary of the Occupy Central protests.

“The federation and other groups are planning to organise some activities on September 28,” Law said. “But pan-democratic parties have not yet taken part in co-organising these activities so far.”

On September 28 last year, Occupy Central co-founder Benny Tai Yiu-ting declared the start of the long-anticipated civil disobedience campaign as crowds gathered to back students arrested at the end of a week-long class boycott.

Anglican priest the Reverend Fung Chi-wood and Wu Chi-wai will hold a prayer service outside Civic Square from 4pm on September 28.
