Political parties are making last ditch pleas to the Town Planning Board to reject a proposal to scrap part of the Hong Kong tram route on the final day of public consultation.

The controversial proposal was put forward by former government planner, Sit Kwok-keung, who said the slow-moving trams are a major cause of traffic congestion in Central. He wants the section from Queensway to Des Voeux Road to be shut down to make room for other road traffic.

Sit’s proposal has sparked public outrage, especially among residents of Hong Kong island. Parties from across the political spectrum organised campaigns against the proposal. League of Social Democrats, the Democratic Party and the Democratic Alliance for the Betterment and Progress of Hong Kong made their presence felt at the board's office in North Point.
