Liberal Party lawmaker Tommy Cheung says he would like to become the chairman of the Legislative Council's House Committee as he wanted to serve the legislature in another role.
Cheung chaired the council's Finance Committee during the last session of the legislature. The incumbent chairman of the House Committee is Andrew Leung from the Business and Professionals Alliance.
Speaking on a radio programme, Cheung said he would like to take up a new challenge.
The chairmanship of the House Committee is an important position as the committee is responsible for setting the legislature's agenda.
Cheung said he wanted to become the chairman of the House Committee "out of personal interests". He also said he believed he would then be able to help the meetings of the council run more smoothly, as it was "easier" for him to communicate with lawmakers in the pan-democratic camp.
But concerns have been raised whether Cheung's move would split the pro-establishment camp.
