The head of the university's School of Humanities, Professor Timothy O'Leary, said all staff and students should continue speaking up about their discontent over the HKU Council's decision to reject a selected candidate as pro-vice-chancellor.
He was speaking to about 1,000 strong crowd, including students and alumni of the University gathered at its campus on Friday evening, demanding the school's Council to explain why it rejected the appointment of Professor Johannes Chan.
O'Leary warned of the bad consequences if Executive Councillor Arthur Li is going to be the next chairman of HKU Council.
The academic staff association of HKU said they are also asking about 500 teachers in the campus if they agree with the council's decision made last month.
William Cheung, the association's chairman, told RTHK’s Candice Wong that they may consider further actions after analysing the survey in two weeks' time.
The governing body's decision to rejected the candidature of Chan has set off many protests.
Some teachers and students allege that it is a case of political interference due to Chan's relation with a pro-democracy group while the pro-government supporters say some academics are using universities to manipulate students to take part in protests against the government and Beijing.
