The government's been urged to facilitate more competition for the taxi trade, by easing vetting and approval criteria for private car hire permits.

IT sector lawmaker Charles Mok made the appeal at the Legislative Council meeting on Wednesday.

Mok said he he'd heard from people in the trade that the criteria for the proper permits was overly stringent, and made it very difficult for private car owners to operate passenger-carrying services legally.

Police arrested several staff and drivers from internet car hiring service Uber in August, on suspicion of carrying passengers without valid permits or insurance.

Legco's Transport sector representative, the Liberal Party's Frankie Yick however, cautioned against allowing more private hire cars onto the roads.
