The Immigration Department on Wednesday started a probe at the Ting Wai Monastery in Tai Po, following allegations that a chief Buddhist nun there, Sik Chi-ting, had entered into fake marriages and committed fraud.

The allegations were made by solicitor Mary Jean Reimer, a former actress who serves as a director of the board of Ting Wai Monastery, in a letter to the Financial Secretary, John Tsang.

Immigration officers took away three people, believed to be foreign domestic helpers, from the monastery for enquiries.

Reimer said on Tuesday that the nun had admitted entering into the fake marriages in order to help two mainland monks secure permanent residency in Hong Kong.
