An assessment jointly conducted by the Hong Kong Observatory and government geo-technical experts has put Hong Kong at a "low to moderate" risk of having an earthquake.
A total of 177 earth tremors, or minor earthquakes, have been felt in Hong Kong since 1905 – when the authorities started monitoring ground movements – and only one has been detected this year.
The experts added that man-made slopes and retaining walls across the city have been designed to withstand the impact of rainfall and earthquakes.
However, a Senior Scientific Officer at the Observatory, Mok Hing-yim, said the public should remain on the alert when they feel a tremor.
"The most important [thing] is to stay calm. [Stay] away from hanging objects", he said.
