The President of the Legislative Council, Tsang Yok-sing, says the controversy over the appointment of the University of Hong Kong's pro-vice-chancellor has damaged the institution.

Tsang, who is also a HKU alumnus, said the damage could have been reduced if the university's governing body - the University of Hong Kong Council -had restarted the whole selection process when the identity of the candidate was leaked.

He also pointed out that when the university’s search committee nominates another candidate for the position, members of the public should “refrain from exerting pressure on the committee as well as the governing body”.

The decision by the University of Hong Kong Council last week to reject the appointment of former law dean, Professor Johannes Chan, sparked a public outcry. Many believe Chan was barred from the pro-vice-chancellorship due to his close ties with Occupy movement founder, Benny Tai.

Students and staff from the university will be holding a number of rallies in the coming days to voice their dissatisfaction with the council’s decision.
