Hong Kong district councillor fined after displaying Nazi slogans in landfill protest

A Hong Kong district councillor has been fined for holding up a banner with Nazi symbols at a protest against a proposed landfill expansion last year.

Sai Kung District Councillor Christine Fong, 48, arrived at LegCo’s public gallery on May 7, 2014, with a mask bearing a Hitler moustache and a banner bearing a swastika.

Less offensively, she was wearing a t-shirt that read “Protect Tseung Kwan O”, but, incidentally, that's against the rules as well.

A week later she was also found shouting in the public gallery.

Fong was fined HKD2,000 at the Eastern Court on Tuesday after earlier pleading guilty to two counts of contravening an administrative order that forbids the display of slogans in certain areas of LegCo.

Her two assistants – who no doubt claim they were just following orders – were also fined HKD2,000 each.

Outside the court, Fong accused other political parties of causing her to be prosecuted, and said she would continue to protest in a rational manner, as she always has done, reports the SCMP.

She has not yet announced whether she will run again in the upcoming district council elections.
