Civic Party lawmaker Dennis Kwok on Sunday warned of a growing intolerance when it came to ideas deemed to be "politically incorrect".

Speaking on RTHK's Letter to Hong Kong, he said upholding values and ideas espoused by Beijing appear to be taking precedence over all other considerations.

Kwok, who represents the legal sector in the Legislative Council, said recent examples include Hong Kong Post's plan to cover up British royal insignia on post boxes, and the University of Hong Kong's decision not to appoint pro-democracy scholar Johannes Chan as the institution’s pro-vice-chancellor.

Kwok said this was all geared towards maintaining the Communist Party's grip on power.

Citing the Cultural Revolution as an example, Kwok said the deliberate efforts to homogenise the beliefs and values of the people will result in what he called "devastating and long-lasting consequences for the economy, social life, and culture". He called on the public to fight against it.
