The Court of First Instance has reserved judgment on legislator Leung Kwok-hung’s appeal against a conviction for attacking a protester while attending RTHK's City Forum in Victoria Park in July last year.
The League of Social Democrats lawmaker, popularly known as Long Hair, was originally acquitted by Eastern Court. But the prosecution asked the magistrate to review the case and Leung was found guilty of a charge of common assault and fined HK$3,000.
Challenging the conviction in the Court of First Instance, Leung’s lawyer said his client had only wanted to protect himself from the protester – who was also fined HK$3,000 for hitting the lawmaker.
But Mr Justice Patrick Li questioned the claim. After watching video footage of the incident, he said the protester had acted provocatively but it appeared that Leung had also pushed the woman.
The judge said he would hand down a written judgment in six to eight weeks' time.
