The chairwoman of the Hong Kong Journalists Association (HKJA), Sham Yee-lan, said on Monday that she is worried that detention of reporters by police would become a regular practice.

She made the remarks after the Secretary for Education, Eddie Ng, asked for the Security Bureau for help to call the police when he found out two reporters were following him around in an unmarked car on Christmas Eve.

Police detained the reporters on suspicion of loitering despite the fact that they had revealed their identity. The reporters were later released.

Sham said it is very inappropriate for the bureau to be involved, saying officers could easily have confirmed the reporters' identity. She said if the intention of the detention was to keep journalists from reporting, that would be a serious breach of press freedom.
