An internship training company is denying it engaged in illegal activity, saying it’s an “entirely legitimate business” with partners including the British Council and 50 universities worldwide.
CRCC Asia is reacting to claims by a purported intern that he was cheated by the company.
The 29-year-old man, identified as Michael in a Ming Pao Daily report carried by EJ Insight, said he paid 6,500 euros (US$6,892) which included fees for a training visa only to find out the company filed no application for it.
CRCC Asia co-founder Edward Holroyd Pearce said Tuesday that they had no such intern.
“Our standard procedure for all students on the program was to apply for the legitimate training visa with the immigration authorities, as we had been informed to do by various organizations,” Pearce said in an e-mail to EJ Insight.
“All students sign a standard terms and conditions document with CRCC Asia prior to their program, and we believe that they received everything that was expected as part of this agreement.”
Also, Pearce said CRCC Asia never promised financial analyst jobs.
“We are very clear in all of our materials that this is work experience and may involve regular office duties,” he said.
On Nov. 21, Ming Pao Daily reported that immigration authorities had arrested three foreigners after a raid on a company in an alleged internship racket.
The suspects — two British nationals and a Canadian student — allegedly recruited other foreigners for CRCC Asia, the report said.
CRCC Asia said none of the suspects was involved in any recruitment for the company and that it is liaising with authorities.
Ming Pao Daily said it stands by its story.
