A member of the University of Hong Kong's governing body has called for a period of calm to reflect on what would be the best structure of governance for the institution.

The University of Hong Kong Council has had a turbulent few months, with heated debate surrounding its decision not to appoint a pro-democracy scholar and the school's former law dean, Johannes Chan, to the post of pro-vice-chancellor.

On Wednesday, the Chief Executive, CY Leung, named a former secretary for education Arthur Li as the council's chairman, despite opposition from 98 percent of the university's alumni and staff.

Council member, Professor Timothy O'Leary, from the School of Humanities at the university, said there is a need for a review of the council's structure, which may force a change in the law that states that Hong Kong's leader is the chancellor of all local public universities.

He also said it would be a good idea to get external reviewers to look at the university’s situation and make recommendations.
