Although an official announcement on Arthur Li's appointment as chairman of HKU's council was not made until after midnight on Thursday, the appointment notice was discovered by an internet user several hours earlier.
On the government website, the notice was found to have been published on January 1 2015 – a full year before Li is supposed to take over as chairman.
Francis Fong, president of the Hong Kong Information Technology Federation, believes human error may have caused the document to appear earlier than expected.
The wrong notice was later taken offline.
