A mainlander is suing former executive councillor Barry Cheung for the return of a a HK$20 million debt.
According to court documents, the man said he was introduced to Cheung in 2012, and agreed to lend him the money because he was a high-ranking official with a good background.
At the time, Cheung was preparing to list the now-defunct Hong Kong Mercantile Exchange – the platform he founded for trading commodity futures, options and other financial derivatives.
The plaintiff is also demanding interest on the amount he lent to Cheung, as well as other damages.
Cheung was declared bankrupt in April with debts of HK$116 million.
