First the MacLehose Trail gets recognised as one of the world's best hikes by the National Geographic, and now Sharp Island in Sai Kung gets named one of Asia's top nine underrated tourist attractions? We're swelling with homegrown pride, you guys.

Today, CNN published a list of nine "unheralded" spots in Asia which have slipped under the radar in favour of tourism titans like Angkor Wat and the Great Wall of China (which isn't as visible from space as people like to think).

Hong Kong-based writer Chris Dwyer (a.k.a. @finefooddude), tipped Sharp Island as an "ideal snorkelling destination", given that it's surrounded by some of the "cleanest and clearest water" in Hong Kong which is home to even more coral than Cheung Chau's Coral Beach.

Sharp Island's not just for the diving enthusiasts, either: geology buffs will likely be fascinated by a collection of different volcanic rocks that can be found on the island's beaches, thanks to its location at the edge of a volcanic crater some 140 million years ago.

Local volcanic wonders aside, Dwyer's also recommended old-school Singaporean and Macanese villages, pristine islands and archaelogical sites scattered across the continent. Check out the full list here.

How to get there: Boats from Sai Kung Public Ferry Pier leave for Sharp Island every 30 minutes until 5:30pm. Call the Sai Kung Ferry Traders Association at 9080 5794 or 9082 2057 for more information.
