Pan-democratic legislators on Wednesday called for a pay cut for the Secretary for Development, Paul Chan, for failing to declare interest in two offshore companies revealed by the so-called Panama Papers.
Neo Democrats lawmaker, Gary Fan, and Labour Party legislator, Fernando Cheung, made the call during the ongoing debate on the budget.
They also tabled motions to cut the budget for the Development Bureau in light of all the problems arising from major infrastructure projects like the third runway at Hong Kong International Airport and the Hong Kong-section of the express rail link to Guanzhou.
The lawmakers also slammed the bureau for its development plan for northwestern New Territories, which they say is forcing residents out of their homes.
But the Secretary for Transport and Housing, Anthony Cheung, said cutting the budget will seriously hinder government operations in many areas, including public housing and the construction of the third runway.
Lawmakers are expected to vote on the budget on May 11.
