Members of the Hong Kong Journalists Association and seven other news unions will gather outside Ming Pao's headquarters in Chai Wan on Monday afternoon, to protest against the controversial sacking of a senior editor last month.
They say they are not convinced by the newspaper's claim that executive chief editor Keung Kwok-yuen was let go to save money.
The newspaper’s staff association has demanded senior management revisit the decision, and believes the sacking was linked to Keung's editorial decisions.
Ming Pao says it had no choice but to lay off staff given a difficult business environment, and its editorial principals remain unchanged.
Since the sacking, several columnists have expressed their concern over the decision by leaving their columns blank. However, the columns were accompanied by a footnote from the paper explaining that Keung was let go as part of cost-cutting measures.
Lawmaker Ip Kin-yuen, who represents the education sector in the Legislative Council, says many teachers and school principals are also concerned as the newspaper is used widely in schools.
“We are trying to make them understand that we [are] really concerned about that, and they are doing the wrong thing to remove Mr Keung,” he said. “We hope that they understand they are losing the faith of many people, including many teachers, [and] many schools principals.”
