Pro-democracy demonstrators carried solemn black protest banners from Causeway Bay to Central this afternoon, led by the organisers of the Occupy Central movement.
They were joined by students who have pledged to take part in a week-long strike for universal suffrage starting on September 22nd.
Occupy Central convenor Benny Tai said that he fully supports the student boycott, though his movement is not involved in it.
Today’s ‘black cloth march’ was to encourage the public to ‘rationally consider’ whether to join the upcoming occupation protests, he said.
Tai admitted that civil disobedience is usually undertaken by a minority, though it is an influential group that is willing to make the sacrifice.
One of the banners read “the government broke its promise”, whilst another simply declared “student strike”.
The mood was sombre as protesters, dressed in black, sported yellow ribbons for democracy.
There was a significant police presence, as demonstrators were divided up into narrow pens.
The first occupation protest is likely to be held within the coming month.
