Veteran democracy activist Martin Lee and student leader Joshua Wong have appealed to the US President Barack Obama to raise the subject of democracy in Hong Kong in an upcoming meeting with visiting President Xi Jinping.
The two democracy activists are in the United States to attend an event sponsored by Freedom House, a US-based pro-democracy and freedom monitoring organisation.
Talking to the New York Times, Lee said the US should view Hong Kong as a cautionary tale. "If China doesn’t deliver on democracy on Hong Kong, then your president ought to know that any agreement that he might enter into with Xi Jinping could end up the same way,” Lee told the newspaper.
For his part, Wong said Beijing is trying to eliminate the differences between Hong Kong and mainland China. Under the worst-case projection, he said, “after 2047, ‘one country, two systems’ will change back to ‘one country, one system’.
Wong said after he started leading students’ protests, his telephone had been tapped and that he had been pilloried by the pro-Beijing news media. “They say I am a CIA agent, or even that I received US military training,” he said.
