Joseph Tung speaks to RTHK's Janice Wong
The Travel Industry Council (TIC) has backed a proposal from the Business and Professionals Alliance to boost the number of mainland visitors by allowing some 20 million mainland e-passport holders to get visas online.
The executive director of the Council, Joseph Tung, said he hopes the plan can help Hong Kong attract more high-end, overnight visitors.
The Vice-Chairman of the Alliance, Jeffrey Lam, said the proposal has been positively received by the government, and hopes officials will implement the plan as soon as possible.
Hong Kong’s tourism and retail industries say they’ve been hit hard by a marked decline in visitor numbers over the past few months. The government has expressed concern over the issue, and said it is working closely with the Tourism Board to revive the travel industry.
