A Sha Tin magistrate has criticised the time limit set for the disposal of cases related to voters' registration, describing them as "ridiculous" and "unreasonable".
Under the law, the court has to complete all procedures on such cases within nine days.
Acting Chief magistrate Andrew Ma made the call as he heard several hundred such cases this week.
He requested the government to amend laws to give the court more time to handle the hundreds of complaints and expressed hope that the time allowed could be extended by at least four weeks.
Many of the cases in court were lodged by pan-democratic lawmakers who suspect their rival camp will rig votes in the upcoming District Council elections.
