The convenor of the University of Hong Kong's Alumni Concern Group, Ip Kin-yuen, has called on the Chief Executive CY Leung to reveal details of at least one meeting he held with the university's vice-chancellor Peter Mathieson, weeks before the rejection of liberal scholar Johannes Chan's appointment to a senior managerial post.

The meeting was revealed by a source close to the university, but Mathieson has so far refused to comment on it.

The Chief Executive's Office, meanwhile, has not denied that the meeting took place. It said that the CE meets with people of all backgrounds from time to time to exchange ideas.

But Ip said the meeting is very “inappropriate” as it raises suspicion that the CE was trying to exert pressure on Mathieson over the appointment issue. “Such intervention violates the principle of institution of autonomy as stated in the Basic Law”, Ip said.

Meanwhile, hundreds of people are expected to take part in a rally organised by different concern groups at the University of Hong Kong on Friday in protest against the council's controversial decision to reject Chan's appointment.
