The governing council of the Chinese University has decided to suspend its discussion on the nomination of the council's new chairman, saying many of its newer members need more time to find their feet.

The present chairman, Vincent Cheng's term expires on Friday, and from Saturday onwards, his role will be taken over temporarily by vice chairman Chien Lee until an
official successor is named.

The vice-chancellor of the university, Joseph Sung, said the council had "quite a number" of new council members who needed more time and experience to find their feet. They needed to familiarize themselves with the nomination process.

Students have demanded more say at the university, and the council agreed to allow Wong Ching-fung, president of the Student Union of the Chinese University of Hong Kong to join the meeting after students rallied to call for representation.
