A former secretary for security, Regina Ip, who worked with former chief executive Donald Tsang, says she is embarrassed that he has been charged with misconduct in public office following the conviction last December of former chief secretary Rafael Hui on corruption charges.

"It is truly unfortunate that we, Hong Kong people, have not done our best to govern Hong Kong in accordance with highest standards of integrity", said Ip who is now an Executive and legislative councillor, as well as the chairwoman of the New People's Party.

However, solicitor and independent lawmaker, Paul Tse, said he believes there had been political considerations in Tsang's case as it took more than three years after a probe first began to prosecute him.

Tam Yiu-chung - a lawmaker from the Democratic Alliance for the Betterment and Progress of Hong Kong - said it was difficult to say how Tsang's case may impact Hong Kong's image, noting that the courts have yet to find the former chief executive guilty.
