Two protesters arrested during an anti-parallel trading protest in Yuen Long in March, have been acquitted of assaulting and obstructing a police officer after the court found the officer's testimony untrustworthy.
In delivering his verdict in Tuen Mun Court, Deputy Magistrate Pang Leung-ting said the police sergeant involved in the case, Yau King-man, had given testimony that went against what was in a video footage of the incident.
He added that there was insufficient evidence to prove that Chan Pui-ying and Kwong Kin-shing were guilty and gave them the benefit of the doubt.
Localist groups organised a number of anti-parallel trading protests earlier this year to express their discontent with the surge of parallel trading activities in Yuen Long and some other parts of the New Territories.
There were occasional chaos and clashes with police. The government, meanwhile, has repeatedly blamed the recent drop in visitors from the mainland to the protests.
