The chairman of the University of Hong Kong's governing council, Leong Che-hung, says he doesn't see why he has to step down over the body's controversial decision to reject the appointment of a liberal legal scholar for a key managerial post.
Dr Leong insisted the decision was made in the best and long-term interest of the university and he believed no one had influenced or pressured members to reject Johannes Chan for the post of pro-vice-chancellor.
Mr Chan, a former law dean at the university, was the only candidate for the post.
There have been allegations that he was rejected because of his pro-democracy views. However the council members who voted against him said it was – among other things – because he did not have a PhD.
