A former professor of politics at City University says the territory's universities are losing their appeal to local academics because of suspected political interference.
Speaking on RTHK's Letter to Hong Kong, Joseph Cheng - who is is also the convenor of the Alliance for True Democracy - said it was “undeniable” that the Hong Kong University Council's decision not to appoint Johannes Chan, a pro-democracy scholar, as pro-vice-chancellor was politically motivated.
He said the situation had caused concern not only for academics but also for the general public, adding that scholars now have to be seen to be “politically correct” to be accepted into management, and that Mr Chan had been deemed “politically incorrect”.
