About 10 members of League of Social Democrats have protested outside the Office of the Chief Executive, claiming that the central government and the Chief Executive, CY Leung, were damaging the autonomy of the University of Hong Kong.

They also demanded that members of the university's governing council, including Arthur Li, should resign after the council rejected former law dean Johannes Chan's appointment as pro-vice-chancellor.

Meanwhile, staff and students at the university are planning to stage a silent march at its campus in the afternoon to protest against alleged interference in the institution's autonomy.

One of the organisers of the protest, Professor Timothy O'Leary, who is also the head of the university's School of Humanities, said the recent saga surrounding the appointment of Chan has created worries about academic freedom at the university.
