Pro-establishment lawmakers have snapped up leading positions of the House Committee, breaking a long-standing tradition of having a pan-democrat to serve as deputy.
Andrew Leung from the Business and Professionals Alliance stayed on as chairman, while cultural sector legislator Ma Fung-kwok defeated Sin Chung-kai from the Democratic Party by 32 votes to 27 in the vice-chairmanship election.
The pan-dems suffered similar defeats in the Finance Committee elections, with insurance sector's Chan Kin-por becoming chairman, and DAB's Chan Kam-lam being his deputy. They defeated Democratic Party chairwoman Emily Lau.
The pro-government Liberal Party supported Sin and Lau in the elections. Its outspoken lawmaker, James Tien, said having no pan-democratic representatives at the top of these two committees would deprive the pro-democracy camp of a chance for direct dialogue with government officials.
