An insurance executive, who failed to register the birth of his two daughters, has been given an eight-month jail sentence, suspended for two years.
Nicholas Cousins earlier pleaded guilty to the offence, as well as aiding and abetting the girls' mother, Herminia Garcia, to overstay her visa.
Garcia was jailed for one year after admitting breaching the condition of her visa and staying in Hong Kong since 1994.
The case came to light after their 15-year-old elder daughter fell to her death from their flat in Repulse Bay in April.
In passing sentence in Eastern Court, Magistrate So Wai-tak said it was selfish for the parents to let their daughters remain undocumented for so long.
He said putting Garcia in jail would have an adverse impact on their surviving daughter who is now aged 15. But So stressed that he cannot suspend her jail sentence because that would encourage other people to overstay their visas.
