Chief Executive Leung Chun-ying sidestepped an unusual question during a Legislative Council Q&A session on Thursday, when radical pro-democracy lawmaker Wong Yuk-man asked him: “When will you die?”
Wong jumped to the question after Legco president Jasper Tsang Yok-sing pressed him to get to the point following a tirade against Leung for “betraying” Hong Kong.
Soon after he raised the question, however, Federation of Trade Unions lawmaker Wong Kwok-kin questioned whether Leung had been insulted and asked Tsang to pass judgment.
To the visible surprise of many in the chamber, the Legco president told Leung to answer the question about his lifespan.
“I think the chief executive can answer this question,” Tsang ruled, without much hesitation.
Leung smiled and responded: “I hope Mr Wong is going to have a long life because grievances wouldn’t do him any good.”
Leung followed by talking about the administration’s hard work in implementing its work according to the policy address.
Wong later said he had come under pressure from his constituents to ask Leung the question.
