Organisers of a protest against the controversial Copyright (Amendment) Bill say they will have a hundred volunteers at the rally to ensure the safety of protesters following a small explosion outside the Legislative Council on Wednesday night.
Thousands of people were expected to turn out at the protest against legislation that they fear will limit freedom of expression, but the debate on the bill at Legco was adjourned for a week because of a lack of quorum.
Police are hunting two masked men who were seen in CCTV footage fleeing after throwing objects into the bin after setting them alight. A gas cylinder and a bottle of alcohol were found nearby.
"We've got a hundred helpers to try to make sure the event is safe," one of the organisers, Sixtus Leung from Youngspiration, said, adding that they did not believe the explosion would affect next week’s turnout.
He said they are expecting around 10,000 people to join the rally next Wednesday.
Police have appealed to eye witnesses of the explosion to come forward and call 6803 0207 to contact officers in charge of the arson case.
