Secretary for Justice Rimsky Yuen is being treated for “abdominal discomfort” in a hospital and has been forced to miss several official meetings since Tuesday.

Yuen’s secretary said his condition is not serious and no surgery is involved, Apple Daily reports.

He is expected to be discharged this week but he missed Friday’s Legislative Council transport panel hearing.

Yuen was last seen in public on Monday.

No official explanation about his absence had been made public until Thursday when the Transport and Housing Bureau wrote Legco that Yuen was recovering in hospital and would be absent from the committee hearing.

The letter said Yuen would attend a Legco meeting on Wednesday to answer questions from lawmakers regarding a proposed immigration co-location plan for the cross-border high-speed rail.

Legislator Kwok Ka-ki said a co-location scheme that violates “one country, two systems” would be a bigger disaster than canceling the controversial rail project.

Kwok said the issue must be sorted out before Legco can approve extra funding for the project.

If Yuen’s health condition permits, special meetings should be arranged for him to answer lawmakers’ questions, he said.

Yuen, 51, was also absent from a national day cocktail reception on Oct.1
