Hong Kong has dropped to eighth in a ranking of the Best Student Cities 2016 from fifth last year, Ming Pao Daily reported Wednesday.
Paris, with 404 points overall, and Melbourne (398) retained the top two places in the ranking of cities for international students by Quacquarelli Symonds (QS), followed by Tokyo, Sydney and London.
The cities were evaluated using five indicators: university rankings by QS, affordability, student mix, desirability and employer activity.
Hong Kong scored 373 points, behind Singapore, which ranked sixth with 380, and Montreal (377).
Berlin and Seoul rounded out the top 10.
Except for employer activity, the other indicators for Hong Kong dropped.
The city’s affordability decreased the most, to 56.7 points from 63 points in the previous survey.
Desirability fell 4.3 points to 83.7.
This indicator is partly based on the Economist Intelligence Unit’s Liveability Index.
The EIU report, released early this year, indicated that increasing conflict due to the pro-democracy movement last year and corruption scandals involving senior government officials and financial consortiums contributed to a decline in Hong Kong’s livability.
