Democratic Party legislator James To has criticised a police request for the video-sharing site, YouTube, to remove a video that appeared to show an officer assaulting an arrested person.
In its latest transparency report, Google – which owns YouTube – said the police’s Technology Crime Division claimed the video “disseminates a false message that Hong Kong Police assaulted a person under arrest in a police vehicle”.
Google at the end rejected the request made between July and December last year.
To, a member of the Legislative Council’s Security Panel, accused the government's of trying to stifle freedom of expression and information.
“It is not acceptable for the government or the police to seek to remove any of the video clips,” he said,
To added it was "unwise" for authorities to seek to remove videos unless there is a court ruling on the case.
