Tight security will be thrown around the Legislative Council building when deliberations resume on a controversial copyright amendment bill after a fire and an explosion marred Wednesday’s start of debate.
Lawmakers will meet again on Dec. 16 after proceedings were halted this week by a lack of quorum.
Legco President Jasper Tsang said public access to the chamber’s gallery section will be limited to 10 people, Ming Pao Daily reports.
Also, police will be deployed in the Legco assembly area.
However, no heightened security alert to threat level is being planned, he said.
The measures have been prompted by a fire and an explosion outside the Legco building where a few people were holding a protest organized by concern group Keyboard Frontline.
The fire and explosion were traced to a rubbish bin near the protest area.
A security camera recorded someone setting fire to a bunch of newspapers and stuffing them in the bin, according to reports.
The protesters had left before the incident, vowing to resume their action on Dec. 16.
Tsang said police are continuing their investigation but none of the protesters is a suspect.
He said at least 400 policemen will be deployed to provide security at the next session.
Kafka Luk, a spokesman for Keyboard Frontline, said he expects 10,000 to 20,000 protesters at the Dec. 16 rally.
