A think tank has suggested that all young people should be made to state whether or not they're willing to donate their organs when they die at the same time as they apply for their adult ID cards.
The Hong Kong Ideas Centre surveyed 1,500 people and said while around 40 percent were willing to donate their organs, three quarters hadn't registered as donors.
The think tank's executive director Anna Lai said asking people to state their preference when they turn 18 could help boost the number of donors in the city.
Currently, nearly 180,000 people have volunteered to join the Department of Health's Centralised Organ Donation Register. However, organs can be taken only from people who are brain dead and while their hearts are still beating. They should also be free from major ailments like cancer or have any infectious diseases.
