The Chief Secretary Carrie Lam said on Wednesday that Hong Kong did not suffer "tremendously" from the 79-day pro-democracy Occupy movement last year.
During the Occupy movement, top officials, including the Chief Executive CY Leung, had repeatedly warned about the economic impact of the protests that were triggered by government's political reform proposals.
Leung had specifically warned during the early days of the protests about the potential economic impact and damage to Hong Kong's reputation.
However, in the clearest official evaluation of the Umbrella Movement, Lam told a business lunch organised by the Trade Development Council: “I think everyone of us in the government do not feel that Hong Kong has suffered tremendously from the Occupy movement.”
Lam also said the effect of Occupy Central on businesses’ confidence in Hong Kong was “negligible” and she was told by her overseas friends that the way the government handled the situation boosted their confidence in the city.
