A Hong Kong police officer told two South Asians to “go back to India” if they didn’t want to be subjected to identity checks, a social media post that has gone viral said.

Manreek Walia, one of the two men, shared his account of the incident and a picture on his Facebook page.

Walia said he has lived in Hong Kong for more than 10 years.

On Saturday, he said, a plainclothes detective stopped him and a friend in Central for identity checks, Next Magazine reported the same day.

After the police officer checked everything including their pockets, phones and wallets, Walia couldn’t help asking him, “Why do you always check brown-skinned people?”

The officer replied, “If you don’t want us to check you, you should go back to India.”

Walia said he has permanent residency in Hong Kong, and his friend was born in the city.

They don’t deserve to be treated like this, Walia said.

He told Passion Times the police are racist.

They stop him to check his identity nearly once a week, he said.

A South Asian woman who was born in Hong Kong left a comment on the post saying she has the same feeling.

She said she is a taxpayer and shouldn’t be treated so differently.

Netizens responded furiously to how Walia had been treated.

Some of them suggested he should note down the name and number of the police officer and lodge a complaint against him.
