Two women in custody in Hong Kong with a history of drug abuse died last week.

On Dec. 10, a 40-year-old woman incarcerated at Lo Wu Correctional Institution was declared dead at a public hospital after she was found bleeding from her leg in a bath earlier that day.

Two days later, a 39-year-old woman, remanded in custody at Tai Lam Centre for women, was found by correctional officers hanging from her bra inside the toilet of the centre hospital. She was pronounced dead at a public hospital the following day.

Both women received immediate treatment from staff before being transferred to hospital for further treatment.

The former was sentenced to the correctional institution for the offence of theft on Nov. 30. The latter was remanded for trafficking in a dangerous drug only two days before her death.
