The Chief Executive, CY Leung, said on Wednesday that a public consultation will be launched in the first half of the year on the controversial development plan for Lantau.

Speaking during his Policy Address, he said a dedicated Lantau Development Office will be set up as soon as possible to carry out the task.

The announcement came just days after a government advisory committee submitted a report to the administration suggesting the building of more than a dozen tourist attractions on the island, including a spa resort at Cheung Sha Beach and a water park in Mui Wo.

Conservationists are upset at the proposals, saying they are going to "plunder Hong Kong people's invaluable natural resources”.

But Leung said apart from stepping up conservation efforts, "short and medium-term improvement measures should also be put in place to facilitate public enjoyment of Lantau".

He said after consulting the public, the government will draw up a blueprint and a timetable for developing Lantau.
