A leader of the pro-democracy Sunflower student movement in Taiwan said on Wednesday that he had been refused a visa to come to Hong Kong.

Huang Kuo-chang said on social media that he had been invited by CNN to attend a political debate programme being filmed in Hong Kong, but his visa application had been rejected.

He said he had already been barred from entering the territory once before, during the Occupy protests in 2014.

Huang said he couldn't understand why he would be turned away again. He said the only explanation was that Hong Kong has lost its autonomy under Beijing's rule.

The Immigration Department said it would not comment on individual cases.
